The Tactile Knitwear Guide: Sourcing Traceable Merino & Alpaca

Knitwear is the most intimate architecture we wear. It sits against the skin, holds warmth, and — if chosen well — becomes softer with every winter rather than thinner.

Traceability as Tenderness

Ask where the fiber was grown, how it was scoured, who knitted the garment. Traceable merino from well-managed flocks has a spring you can feel between thumb and finger. Alpaca offers hollow fibers that trap air without the itch some wools carry.

A good sweater should drape, not balloon. Look for a gauge that is dense enough to keep its shape after washing, with ribbing that rebounds. Avoid glued shoulder tape and synthetic blends that pill into a gray fog.

Care as Ritual

Hand-wash in cool water with a wool-safe soap, press — never wring — between towels, and dry flat on a mesh rack. Store with cedar, not mothballs. Fold, do not hang, so the shoulders keep their geography.

One excellent navy crewneck, one oatmeal cardigan, and one charcoal mock-neck will carry you from first frost to the last pale evening of March.
